Until the ‘revolution’ Iran was one of three key pro-Western strongholds in the middle east, necessary for local worker demands and keeping oil production cheap
- A May day march in Tehran (capital) drew 1.5 million demonstrators
- The establishment of ‘The All Iran Workers’ union’ declared its aims of Iran “free of class oppression”
- The religious fundamentalists clerics lead by Khomeini were terrified of the power of the working class and haunted by the idea of the imminent collapse of Iran capitalism
- Khomeini established the Iranian Republican Party (IRP) to dilute the opposition party’s and take control of the people votes
